When Vera Was Sick

by Vera Rosenberry
Henry Holt and Company, 1998
This charming book captures the dreamy boredom of a week spent sick in bed. Poor Vera has a fever, a stomachache, and spots all over. She suffers through days and nights in the sick room, a quiet spare bedroom with spooky wallpaper. The wallpaper, the room, and Vera herself are rendered beautifully in watercolors. It’s particularly nice to see Vera’s pallor improve when she’s finally well again.
