This Is London

This is London

by Miroslav Sasek
Universe, reissued in 2004

The London depicted in this classic book no longer exists. A list in the back depicts the many ways the city has changed since 1959 when the book was first published. But this volume (and the 17 others Sasek wrote, such as This Is Rome and This Is San Francisco) captures the personality and magic of the city in a way that transcends time. The text is factual and straightforward, but the illustrations, with their elongated people and buildings and delicate color, are humorous and thoroughly charming. Reading a Sasek book is perfect for armchair traveling, and may even inspire young explorers to discover the wonders of a city on their own.
