The Great Kapok Tree

by Lynne Cherry
Harcourt Brace & Co., 1990

When a man sent into the rainforest to cut down a great Kapok tree naps at its base, the animals (and a child) of the rainforest take turns pleading for their home to be spared. Cherry’s beautiful illustrations suggest the vibrant rainforest ecosystem and artfully convey the animals’ message that “all living things depend on one another.” The simple, dreamlike story would be effective read aloud; more confident readers may benefit from guidance from an adult on more difficult vocabulary.
