The Firekeeper’s Son

by Linda Sue Park
illustrated by Julie Downing
Clarion Books, 2004
Before email, before television, before telephones, how did people quickly get information from one place to another? In this story by Newbery Medal winner Park, set in 19th-century Korea, a firekeeper lights a bonfire atop a mountain every evening to signal to a faraway king that the shoreline is still secure. This lovely picture book introduces an interesting idea within a well-paced narrative--the firekeeper’s son must light the signal fire himself when his father is injured. All ends well, but a little gentle suspense ensures the journey is interesting.
