Tell Me a Picture

by Quentin Blake
Frances Lincoln Children’s Books, 2001
Published to accompany an exhibition at London’s National Gallery, this unusual, thought-provoking, and imagination-sparking book presents 26 pictures selected by Britain’s Children’s Laureate Quentin Blake for their “sense of story.” The pictures include not only major paintings from British museums but also illustrations from European children’s books. Organized not by subject or style but alphabetically by artist, the pictures are introduced by quirky cartoon characters who comment and react to each work, inviting readers to do the same.
