Slap, Squeak, and Scatter

Slap, Squeak, and Scatter

by Steve Jenkins
Houghton Mifflin Company, 2001

Bees dance to tell other bees they’ve found food. Male orb-web spiders rhythmically pluck a female’s web to say they’re mates, not prey. Beavers slap their tails on the water to warn other beavers of danger. These are just a few of the methods of animal communication featured in this beautiful picture book. Preschoolers may need a little help with the vocabulary but will be fascinated nonetheless by the behaviors described and the large, striking cut-paper illustrations.
