March of the Penguins

from the film by Luc Jacquet
narration written by Jordan Roberts
photography by Jérôme Maison
National Geographic, 2006
Based on the popular documentary movie of the same name, this picture book combines stills from the film with simple text to explain the emperor penguin’s annual migration to its nesting ground in Antarctica. The photogenic penguins’ long journey and the hardships they face to raise their chicks can’t help but inspire admiration, and the adorable chicks, of course, are irresistible. One especially dramatic double-page photo shows a seemingly endless line of penguins marching single-file across the snow. Although adults may not find the book as compelling as the film, the shorter, easier format may be a better match for youngsters with short attention spans.
