Mapping Penny’s World

by Loreen Leedy
Henry Holt and Company, 2000

After Lisa learns about maps at school, she goes home and makes some maps of her own—with the help of her pet Boston terrier, Penny. The maps, which show some of Penny’s favorite places, clearly demonstrate how such basic elements as the key, symbols, scale, and the compass rose are used. Younger children may not understand all the concepts, but they’ll enjoy looking at the crisp, colorful illustrations and (with some help from an adult) reading the maps to see where Penny goes.
