A girl in Texas frees a young sandhill crane from a plastic six-pack holder and names him Luck. The lucky bird then joins his parents on the long journey north to their nesting ground. Along the way, they memorize landmarks, rest in cornfields with thousands of other cranes, and are admired by cheering birdwatchers. Once they reach Siberia, Luck leaves his parents and finds a mate, with whom he makes the return flight back to Texas. Told with humor and just enough drama to keep things interesting, this beautifully illustrated, heartwarming story provides an enjoyable introduction to bird migration.
