Little Bull

by Ellen Foley James
Sterling Publishing, 1998
This remarkable photo essay is out of print, but it’s worth looking for at your local library. It tells the story of Little Bull, a baby elephant protected and nurtured by the herd his Grandmother Torn Ear leads across the grassy plains of Africa. The book’s simple text is engaging and evocative, but the spectacular closeup photographs are what really make the story a winner. They vividly convey the herd’s daily life and Africa’s stunning landscape. And who can resist a photo of a baby elephant trying to stand on his head?
