Honk! Honk!

by Mick Manning and Brita Granström
Kingfisher, 1997
The young narrator of this fanciful story flies away one night with a wild goose heading north to her summer nesting grounds. There the child watches five fluffy goslings hatch and grow until summer ends and it’s time to fly back south. The length and dangers of the journeys to and fro are deftly but gently conveyed, and the story ends with a spread filled with goose facts from a book that appears to belong to the narrator. Bright watercolor illustrations enhance the simple text, which includes an enthusiastic “Honk! Honk!” on nearly every page.
