Exploring Caves: Journeys into the Earth

Exploring Caves

by Nancy Holler Aulenbach and Hazel A. Barton
National Geographic Children’s Books, 2001

Far too few children’s books feature the adventures and explorations of real-life scientists, and even fewer focus on women in the field. This book for older children tracks a microbiologist and a teacher as they explore frozen ice caves in Greenland and dive into underwater caves in Mexico. In their own words, the women explain their fascination with caves and tell how they became cave explorers. The gorgeous photos, which capture the unusual beauty of these underground places, may inspire a few young readers to share the authors’ passion.
