Building

by Elisha Cooper
Greenwillow Books, 1999
Another book about building, from empty lot to office tower, but its imagination and heart set it apart from the pack. Watercolor-and-pencil sketches convey motion and bustle, and the text is very descriptive, even poetic--a backhoe “gnaws into the earth and scoops up dirt like a messy eater,” and mortar is like lumpy oatmeal. The workers who pour the foundation and build the steel skeleton are brought to life with well-chosen detail. They joke around, eat fried chicken for lunch, and even use the Porta Potti.
