Bears in the Forest

Bears in the Forest

by Karen Wallace
illustrated by Barbara Firth
Candlewick Press, 1994

Deep in a forest cave, a mother black bear sleeps through the winter, while her two newborn cubs nurse and grow. Come spring, the mother bear guides the playful cubs through the forest, teaching them to find food and protecting them from danger until their second summer, when the young bears leave to find homes of their own. Expressive, entertaining two-page illustrations and short factual notes at the bottom of each spread enhance the simple, gracefully written story.
