Baby Whales Drink Milk

by Barbara Juster Esbensen
illustrated by Lambert Davis
HarperCollins Publishers, 1994

Written simply and clearly, this older title provides an excellent introduction to the characteristics and behavior of whales. Focusing primarily on humpback whales, it describes how whales are like humans and other mammals—and therefore unlike fish—and also touches on whale songs and migration. Our only minor quibble is with the illustrations; the book would benefit greatly from the addition of a few photographs.
